Resist or Assist?

Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

When the new nation of the United States of America elected its first President, no one knew how to address him. Since America was populated by people from European monarchies, some wanted to call the President “Your Highness” or “Your Excellency” or other such fancy titles. But the first President, George Washington, would have none of such exaltation. The title he agreed to use was humble and has stuck: “Mr. President.”

History is littered with the biographies of leaders of nations who loved to be exalted and who loved to exalt themselves. The king of Babylon was one. Nebuchadnezzar, typical of ancient kings, saw himself as all-powerful, a potentate above even God Himself. But through Daniel, God delivered a humbling message to the king: He would be humbled for seven years until he confessed that God was the Almighty—which he did (Daniel 4). Nebuchadnezzar learned the lesson of humility the hard way—by suffering.

Nebuchadnezzar is an example of what the Bible teaches throughout: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Better to humble ourselves before God and others than for God to humble us Himself.

God assists the humble but resists the proud. John Blanchard

If You Haven’t Been Wounded, You’re Not in the Battle

Are you under attack?  Does the world hate you?  If you’re a Christian, I mean.  The sheer intensity of the hatred toward Christians — and the hostility of the attacks – is hotter and meaner now than I have ever seen it.  If you haven’t suffered any attacks personally, in this day and age, I would suggest you carefully examine your heart as to just how serious and effective you have been with your faith.  Is it REAL faithfulness to God?  Or it just for show?

As conservative Christians, with a Christian, Conservative worldview, our opinions and the ideas we present are sensible, thoughtful, based on Scripture, even quite scientific and educated.  Yet the “other side,” those who oppose us so strongly, portray us as a bunch of ignorant, intolerant, uneducated morons who are so arrogant we constantly force our “religion” down the throats of everyone else.  Of course, we are also called “hateful bigots,” “war mongers,” “homophobes,” “hypocrites,” and many other things.

Where is this coming from?  Actually, it is coming from just about everywhere.  We would expect the atheists, secular entertainers and movie stars — and especially the new Socialist, “Progressive” Leftists to hate us.  But today, the vicious attacks are coming from even those we’d never expect:  everyday people, our co-workers, school teachers, factory workers, college students, healthcare workers, police, firemen, butchers, bakers and candlestick makers.

There was a time when it was a GOOD thing to be a Christian in America.  Young women sought out a “good Christian man.”  Young men hoped to marry a “nice Christian girl.”  The Bible was called “The Good Book.”    Church was a place of reverence and worship.  Christianity was the cornerstone of a solid family and a moral society.

In those days, it was sort of hard to relate to the words of Jesus in Matthew 10 when He said, “All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end shall be saved.”  Or from John 15, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first.  If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own.  As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.  That is why the world hates you.”  It was hard to imagine being so dreadfully hated for being a Christian back then (which wasn’t that long ago)… Maybe a small minority of the world hated us back then.  But today, if you let it be known you belong to Jesus, the world will give you “both barrels.”

And now, so many regular church-goers just keep their faith to themselves.  As the militant LGBT and “transgenders” have “come out of the closet,” these timid church-goers have happily taken up residence inside.  Better to keep one’s mouth shut than to rock the boat.

In 2001, (nearly 2 DECADES AGO NOW), Thomas Horn of Worthy News Service reported on the growing intensity of hatred of Christianity in the United States.  At that time, he wrote:

“According to some experts a pattern is emerging reminiscent of Jewish persecution in post war Germany. ‘Isolation of, and discrimination against Christians is growing almost geometrically,’ says Don McAlvany in The Midnight Herald.  ‘This is the way it started in Germany against the Jews. As they became more isolated and marginalized by the Nazi propaganda machine, as popular hatred and prejudice against the Jews increased among the German people, wholesale persecution followed.  Could this be where the growing anti-Christian consensus in America is taking us?”

Horn went on to describe the escalation of anti-Christian attitudes in the United States, citing police officials forbidding Christians to hand out Bible tracts on Halloween, the Freedom From Religion Foundation having free reign in public schools across the country to pass out literature such as their booklet, “You can Be Good without God,” the vilification of Christianity in the entertainment industry.  He noted the FBI branding Christian conservatives as hate mongers and potential terrorists.  I might add — since then —  the persecution of Christian ministries and businesses by the IRS and activist judges.

Today, it seems every area of our culture is specifically predisposed to vilify, condemn and ridicule Christians.  Under Obama, it was drilled into our heads that “America is not — and never was — a Christian nation,” and our Department of Homeland Security labeled Christians as “homegrown terrorists.”  Activist judges consistently rule against Christian symbols in public, bullying individuals and communities into secular compliance.  Not to mention those same judges ruining the lives and livelihoods of Christian business people who choose to honor God’s laws rather than cowtow to the LGBT tsunami.   Today we have school children forced to sing songs about Allah at Christmastime, while the name of Jesus must never be uttered.

Yes, like the Nazi propaganda machine that doomed the Jews in Germany, America has its own propaganda machine, and it’s running out of control.  It is said that if you repeat a lie often enough, eventually even the liar will believe it to be true.  So, today, we have people we would never expect standing on the side of the God-haters.  And the words from the 2001 news article reverberate in our ears today:

“This is the way it started in Germany against the Jews. As they became more isolated and marginalized by the Nazi propaganda machine, as popular hatred and prejudice against the Jews increased among the German people, wholesale persecution followed…”

After 20 years of anti-Christian propaganda, American Christians are now more isolated, more marginalized, and MOST have become extremely timid, and sadly apathetic about their faith — if they have any REAL Christian faith at all.  For it has now come to pass that even our CHURCHES have bowed the knee to the progressive Leftists that have seized power in our government, news media, public schools and libraries, the entertainment industry in all its forms — — everywhere we turn the indoctrination and dumbing down of our culture just increases daily… Yes, even in our churches, where pastors refuse to preach the whole counsel of God, once again, bowing the knee to the opinions of the culture so as to remain well liked and popular — certainly NOTHING controversial would ever be allowed to be spoken of in most any Christian church today.

The Scriptures are mocked, derided, and discounted as “hate speech.”  The anti-Christian propaganda machine in America is very effective, turning even our friends, families and neighbors against us.  Will not wholesale persecution certainly follow?  History repeats itself, even in places you never thought it could.  But then again, if I told you, just a few years ago that a growing majority of Americans would today be in favor of trashing our Constitution in favor of full-out socialism, would you ever have believed it?

How did we end up in this situation?  Compromise.  Bible-teaching churches compromised with the world.  We changed the message of the Gospel from one of “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” which led into the doctrines of repentance and faith in Jesus’ shed blood for the saving of our souls,  to a simple “Jesus Loves You, this I know — no matter what.  No faithfulness, and certainly no repentance necessary.  Just come as you are…. Jesus is ‘cool’ with that.”   You see, today, VERY few will speak the truth about such things as sodomite marriage or injecting young children with hormones to help them “transition” to the opposite sex, or the indoctrination of VERY young minds with “Drag Queen Story Time,” or, I might add, the embracing — not just of abortion at all stages of a pregnancy — but now actual INFANTICIDE of babies AFTER they have been born.  Because they don’t want to be called “hateful bigots,” simply for having common sense and a conscience, and sharing what God’s Word says about any particular issue.

Today the world sees true Christ-followers as hateful bigots because THEY have been fed the erroneous information that “Christians are supposed to love everyone,” and so we must never question anything, or God forbid, dare mention the word “sin.”  Today, even church-goers are more accepting of the words of satanist Aleister Crowley:  “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.”   That concept is just SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT than that old, dusty Bible stuff!

This false love gospel has been spread far and wide by false teachers who should know better.  They’ve all become quite wealthy and famous, so I don’t need to name names.  You know who I’m talking about.  2nd Timothy 4:3 told us:

“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”

And so, we have.  There’s no shortage of teachers and preachers in our country today who simply say what the people want to hear.  And make no mistake:  they are EXTREMELY popular.  Wolves in sheep’s clothing, indeed.  These are not courageous men and women of God.  These are people-pleasers and money-makers and they’re leading millions down the broad road to destruction.  And they know it, but prefer to line their pockets at the expense of millions of souls that are being SO woefully deceived.   Perhaps the saddest part, is this false theology these  famous preachers spew has now also permeated most of the seminaries as well… so one is now hard pressed to find a true body of God-honoring, Christ followers anywhere anymore.

The pastors of pre-World War II Germany were preaching similar seeker-friendly, social justice messages, being used as pawns in the Nazi propaganda machine.  Adolph Hitler privately referred to them as “Useful Idiots.”  They were useful in that they were dumbing down the populace for him, indoctrinating the people with a false gospel that served his purposes.  I dare say that history is repeating itself today, and the ear-tickling false teachers in our local churches and on national broadcasts are now the Useful Idiots to the new world order regime of the “Progressive” Leftists, and other agents of darkness we are not even aware of yet.

If you’re a Christian in America today, please ready yourself for the battle to come.  Because this is not going away.  Many think we’re immune to persecution.  But I see nothing in Scripture to indicate that the followers of Christ will be immune from persecution or kept from harm.  For centuries, we were free here in this country, and Christianity held in high esteem, the foundation of our schools, our universities, our government, and our homes.  But now that we have turned aside to the false teachings of the ear-ticklers, and since we did not consider it worthwhile to stand up for our Savior, but rather turn a blind eye while He was kicked out of public institutions and scorned by His enemies, now we, too,  must expect the persecution our brothers and sisters in Christ have endured in foreign lands for centuries.  Of course, the persecution will ONLY come to those who are God’s TRUE children — the Remnant believers that are still faithful throughout this land.  The devil will not bother with the Institutional Churches — he already has them on his side.

So be on guard.  Educate yourself in the Scriptures.  Don’t be deceived by the false teachings that abound in our churches today.  Remember 1 Timothy 4:1:

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and doctrines of devils.”

And Mark 13:22 warns:

“…false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive even the elect — if that were possible.”

Bible-believing Christians are now seeing REAL and SERIOUS persecution from the God-hating world as well as the false converts and the deceived who call themselves “Christians” but are really not “of us,” (1 John 2:19).  It can be very hurtful to have a professing brother or sister in Christ condemning you because you are standing strong on the TRUE Word of God, but remember Jesus’ words and CONTINUE, with all diligence, to stand strong:

“All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end shall be saved.”

And finally, those of us who intend to “stand firm to the end,” must continue to speak up, to voice our opinions, to oppose the ungodly wherever they appear.  Yes, we should speak the truth in love, not in arrogance, but we must never cease to speak the truth.  We’re in this spot today because too many cowardly Christians rolled over and let the ungodly have more and more ground.  We have not been good stewards of the faith.  We have NOT been salt and light.  The Bible says salt that has lost its savor is useless and no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.  And so, this is where we find ourselves now:  thrown out and trampled underfoot.

It is time we WAKE UP now, out of our apathetic stupor and UNDERSTAND that this is a SPIRITUAL battle we are in and the enemy of our souls is out to destroy us.  He is especially vicious when it comes to attacks on our children, marriages and families — and anyone who is now TRULY following Christ, WILL suffer persecution.  But wear your battle scars as a badge of honor.  And if you do not already HAVE MANY battle scars, it’s TIME NOW for you to get out of your seat and into the streets!  Don’t bury or waste your “talents.”  But rather engage them.  OCCUPY until He returns.  Be in the Word DAILY, put on the full armor, pray without ceasing, be bold as lions as you confront the darkness in the culture all around us and NEVER give in to the abomination of popular culture or worldly opinions.   And remember, if you’re doing His will, you WILL be wounded, perhaps many times.  But our Father in heaven goes before us and is IN us.  Yes, we KNOW “who wins in the end,” but it is OUR job to get busy and win some of these spiritual battles RIGHT NOW.  Because the very souls of our children and grandchildren DEPEND on what WE decide to do today.

The Lord Comforts Sinners

John 8:1-11

We expect a loving heavenly Father to care for His children when they are hurt, persecuted, or misunderstood. But you might be surprised to realize that God comforts believers even when they have sinned.

Jesus did not come to condemn the world but to save anyone who believes in Him (John 3:17). Consider His response to the woman whom the Pharisees caught committing adultery. They brought her behavior to Jesus’ attention and wanted to stone her. But instead of taking up a rock, Jesus offered forgiveness. The Lord did not defend her actions or completely erase all consequences of her choices. However, He did offer compassion as well as an opportunity to turn her life around and live in the forgiveness He granted: “Go. From now on sin no more” (John 8:11).

The Lord understands our human frailty. And even before we do wrong, He knows the poisonous harvest that we will reap from sin. We certainly want a lot of comfort when we are suffering from our own foolishness. A loving heavenly Father does not abandon His children at their hour of great need—His Spirit wades into the mess we have made. He offers to guide us out of the pit, soothes our broken heart, and provides reassurance that He is always close by.

Sinning against the Lord makes us feel unworthy of His care and solace. Yet God’s forgiveness is based on His great mercy rather than our conduct. If Jesus Christ sacrificed His life to save you from your sins, then He will love and comfort you, no matter what.

The Manna at the Banquet Table

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Mark 12:30-31)

The hymn “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” is summarized in the moving lines of its final verse.

Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
Till our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to heaven,
At His table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself, and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

The Christian’s blessings include daily “manna” (provision and blessing) from God and the promise of life with Christ throughout eternity. Our union with Him is compared to a marriage, commencing with a sumptuous wedding feast: “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints” (Revelation 19:7-8). “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8).

When He comes and claims His bride—the ones for whom He sacrificed His precious blood—He will usher us all into His banquet room. Then “he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them” (Luke 12:37). JDM

New Type of Preacher

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

—Acts 20:24

If Christianity is to receive a rejuvenation, it must be by other means than any now being used. If the Church in the second half of this century is to recover from the injuries she suffered in the first half, there must appear a new type of preacher….

Another kind of religious leader must arise among us. He must be of the old prophet type, a man who has seen visions of God and has heard a voice from the Throne. When he comes (and I pray God there will be not one but many), he will stand in flat contradiction to everything our smirking, smooth civilization holds dear. He will contradict, denounce and protest in the name of God and will earn the hatred and opposition of a large segment of Christendom. Such a man is likely to be lean, rugged, blunt-spoken and a little bit angry with the world. He will love Christ and the souls of men to the point of willingness to die for the glory of the One and the salvation of the other. But he will fear nothing that breathes with mortal breath.   SIZ128-129

Send to Your church today many who have “seen visions of God and… heard a voice from the Throne.” Amen.

Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these

Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.—Matthew 25:45.

Abide ye here, and watch with me.—Matthew 26:38 (R. V.).

If today thou turn’st aside

In thy luxury and pride,

Wrapped within thyself, and blind

To the sorrows of thy kind,

Thou a faithless watch dost keep,

Thou art one of those who sleep.

Anna C. Lynch Botta.

I have been sorrowfully convinced that in what I thought necessary attention to home duties, my time and strength have been engrossed to a degree that I fear has interfered with my duty to others. It is a serious consideration, how much good we miss of doing, by our want of watchfulness for opportunities, and our engrossment even in our lawful and necessary cares; and there is another way, too, in the influence we might continually exert over all who come in contact with us, and through them over others, to an extent of which we are probably not aware, if we continually kept in a meek and quiet spirit. Ah, it may be with some of us that it is more for what we leave undone than for what we do, that we shall be called to an account.

Better To Avoid That Slip

“Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.” Prov. 3:23

That is to say, if we follow the ways of wisdom and holiness we shall be preserved in them. He who travels by daylight along the highway is under some protection. There is a way for every man, namely, his own proper calling in life, and if we devoutly walk therein in the fear of God He will preserve US from evil. We may not travel luxuriously, but we shall walk safely. We may not be able to run like young men, but we shall be able to walk like good men.

Our greatest danger lies in ourselves: our feeble foot is so sadly apt to stumble. Let us ask for more moral strength that our tendency to slip may be overcome. Some stumble because they do not see the stone in the way: divine grace enables us to perceive sin, and so to avoid it. Let us plead this promise, and trust in Him who upholds His chosen.

Alas! our worst peril is our own carelessness, but against this the Lord Jesus has put us on our guard, saying, “Watch and pray.

Oh for grace to walk this day without a single stumble! It is not enough that we do not actually fall; our cry should be that we may not make the smallest slip with our feet, but may at the last adore Him “who is able to keep us from stumbling.”
